I'd rate this really highly in my books just for the fact that it's beautifully written. of course I disagree with the actions of the characters but it's so painfully humane and realistic that I can't help but marvel at how the author is so spot on about the reality of things. it's so good. Paul is obviously an asshole but his circumstances just shows you how your environment as a child totally affects your way of thinking. if I could give reassurance to the young Paul, I would. what happened to him was really unfortunate. that time when he asked himself if he made a mistake after visiting for David's wedding was so sad to read :( I hope he can be true to himself in the future... properly ask for a divorce with Judy and find his happiness for real - I don't care if it's not Jonathan. The face David made when Jonathan introduced him and Paul as friends was so telling that David realized that Paul was still living in lies even after promising that he wouldn't lie again back when they were a kid. that was so beautifully built up. Ah, this manga really is so good - in the ugliest way. it's flaws that makes a person beautiful as they say.
basically my wish for the divorce is happening in the alternate ending but the bittersweet feeling of it is still there. if the author was given more time to expound Jonathan's slow acceptance of his dilemma, it would've been better but even if that happened, it'd still be bittersweet regardless - Jonathan did see Paul being a good father after all. both endings are sad but I'd definitely prefer Paul living honestly from now on instead of having to cheat on Judy multiple times just to pretend to he straight so the alternate ending definitely serves better for me if it was a bit longer.
I'm rating this 5* just for the fact that it's well written
