They hate them because they pollute the ocean and they used to be friendly with the humans but humans got worst. Something about being an invasive species.
I understand that much, but I hate how the mermaids in authority are allowed to turn into humans because they have a pill with them, but then berate mc for doing it. Now I know they're supposed to have it so that they can protect other mermen, but as we can see in Maya's case, they use it as for personal agendas.
Also I'm saying that personality wise they're not that different from humans are they? They also are very classist and ofc treat other less privileged mermaids badly (as we see in case of the restaurant). So it's hypocritical to hate humans yet behave like them
