It’s a bit unfortunate…

I think that a lot of us had really high expectations for this work since BJ Alex, and the anticipation was so intense that when it dropped and we were greeted with beautiful art, subpar and underdeveloped characters, it was a bit disappointing. I think this story had/has potential but, what is grating a bit on my mind is that there seems to be a lack of individuality which we experienced in the writing of BJ Alex. The plot and story idea at the time was what stood out as different than what was being produced then, and since, a lot more different story arcs and ones who found inspiration from BJ Alex have been created giving us readers a really vast pool to choose from.

I think one of the reasons the story falls flat is because if we consider what the author has written in the past, the characters and their personalities are barely any different. If anything, Doc Dan is like a watered down version of DG, while DG found it in himself to stand up to the self centered behavior of Alex, we see that the Doc in this story seems to have a weaker disposition especially when it comes to Jake, and his nasty personality. This isn’t to say that he won’t eventually grow a spine and stand up for himself, but that would play into another point;

Ultimately this story is progressing in a similar fashion to BJ Alex (not as in the semantics of it but more of the basic plot layout). Rude, handsome, popular guy gets together with cute, hardship ridden cinnamon roll. They get together with a power dynamic in place, feelings aren’t the factor but sex first, the introduction of a side friend, the introduction of another love rival to stir the pot, this would most likely lead to the following:

-negative response from the seme
-backlash onto the uke
-a further struggle of understanding where they both stand in one another’s lives
-separation
-growth
-reconciliation

Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with stories like this. I read them quite often and find them entertaining. I think that as readers though, we had higher expectations of the author to create another story that would be revolutionary to us that BJ Alex once was, and to be met with something less inventive and more stereotypical of what is being produced now, I know I found disappointment. The art is immaculate, but the originality for me seems to be lackluster. Maybe it is wrong to put such high expectations onto someone because it is hard to replicate such great success from you first manwha to the second. It’s hard now a days to create something so extremely unique which can bring together and build a new community.

If you read this far I’m impressed bc this was wordy as fuck. Seriously though, it’s just my opinion and feel free to disagree. I’ve been wrong before and often am wrong, so I hope this story continues to progress in a more interesting way.

I find the story disappointing. I find some of the reader’s opinions more disappointing to where they have to attack others with their opinions.
This isn’t the second. It is the second Yaoi but third one.

Hmmm…..I see some truth to this, but I don’t think Alex was destructive and manipulative, if anything he stated from the start what he wanted from DG, he didn’t want a relationship and had his reasons, that doesn’t excuse his very rude ways at all, now to DG I do think he should have understood what the other party wanted, If someone states clear to you the terms for an agreement I do believe you should respect their opinions and stick to it. Overall I don’t see the similarities honestly but nevertheless like I said what you’ve said is actually very true. We’ve read and seen our fair share of the point you highlighted. Great breakdown of the story and plot btw.

I remember they did a shoujou one, but I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet though I heard it did relatively well. In this instance, I was only meaning to reference BJ Alex intentionally as it their third work, Jinx, is almost like returning to their roots in the BL community.

As to the attacking others with their opinions, I know that some people can be more blatant about it than others, and that everyone does have a right to their own opinion. Whether anyone chooses to listen or read it is ultimately up to them. Whether one agrees or disagrees is always plausible too. I don’t think posting could be considered an attack but picking apart multiple comments that might not align with one’s views is definitely a choice, not that this is what it is. But what do I know?

To address your second point, sometimes I do think because we aren’t speaking to each other, you might read into a person’s message and it might be the wrong tone, something like that just happened to me, and it took someone else to tell the other person they’re reading it in the wrong tone except the person just blatantly uses derogatory words

Hi, you’re 1000% correct with not really manipulation, I worded it wrong, I was thinking more along the lines of acted more self centered and self gratifying and used the relationship for his benefit alone. Not manipulation but kind of sleezy in the start! I’ll go correct it if I can!!

As someone who loves this story wholeheartedly, I agree with you. I had really high expectations for Jinx but after seeing that it contains the basic plot of every BL, I was pretty let down. I still love Jinx and I actually pay for it too lmao, but as you suggested, Mingwa's previous work heightened our standards to where we were anticipating something new and different.

The only thing I disagree with is your take on Kim Dan. I don't understand why you consider him to be less individualistic and weak dispositioned compared to DG. The way you view Dan is the way I've seen DG for so long actually lol.

Imo, DG was just a bland simp with no self respect. He allowed so much blatant disrespect and mistreatment from Jiwon when they were sex partners just because he idolized Alex. He didn't speak up for himself until several chapters in and even then he needed alcohol to muster up the courage. I have a lot of respect for DG now, for rejecting Jiwon and getting himself together, but it took a while to get to that point, because he was such a pushover for a considerable amount of time.

Doc Dan on the other hand, retaliated against Jaekyung multiple times so far and we aren't even 30 chapters into Jinx. He smacked Jae across the face two times for pushing his boundaries and told him off twice when Jae was either being an unreasonable dick, or straight up disrespectful. He also recently socked him in the jaw lmao.

The only reason Dan allows certain things to happen to him is because he is not in a position to fight it. Despite this, he has still expressed his low tolerance for certain things by getting firm with Jae, so he for sure has a backbone. I also think he's a very strong person, considering what he endured with the past doctor who assaulted him, the loansharks who abused him constantly, and breaking his back to pay for his grandma's treatments + dealing with Jaekyung. It takes a selfless, strong mentality to not give up in those circumstances and I heavily admire him for that.

DG didn't give those vibes, man
