they are toxic in a way that hits too close to home for most readers lol (ie. cheating, gaslighting) toxic love like obsessive love is easier to differentiate from reality as it isnt at all common. so stories like this gets a pass from everyone
m/m romances however.... whatever floats the boat. no one really talks about how toxic some bls get because its a man on the receiving end, they can pretty much tell its just fantasy and is desensitized from the abuse the uke gets but if its a woman it sets off alarms
