Yes, what he did was cruel but it's also cruel of Karl for how controlling he was as he wanna keep Sasya by himself and in his own fantasy. He didn't care about Sasya's dream, hence why Sasya betrayed him for the freedom and the dream he always thought of. Until reality shut him down again
