I mean, it's pretty clear that the main character is self destructive and doesn't think he deserves being treated with kindness so this kind of conclusion from him is rather realistic. People who have been abused and struggle with low self esteem often think they deserve bad things.
They can eve seek out abusive people because it's the only type of affection they know.
What the characters think doesn't necessarily equal narrative intention.
you bring up a good point, and I admit it was an oversight on my part because I kept getting more and more frustrated as I was reading. His troubled mental state became more apparent in the latest chapter. It's obvious that he doesn't know what tender loving and real affection looks like, since trashy blond ruined all that for him. I hope Avery can heal him.. but now that trashy blonde is back I'm scared of what else he's gonna pull *sigh*
