Alpha beta omega stuff- please explain

MisakiPineapple July 22, 2021 5:34 pm

What is with so many yaoi stories having alpha beta omega setup? It didn’t say anything about it in the description so I’m confused. Is it related to the other ones? Is it a Korean gay hierarchy thing? Is it werewolf stuff? I don’t wanna read this yet if I should be reading something else first.

Also, if possible, could you suggest what I should read first to get a better understanding of the alpha beta pheromone mythos that seems to be in a lot of yaoi? Thanks for any responses!

Its actually a trend until now. The omega alpha beta or omegaverse world. In the nutshell, alpha is in the top of hierarchy. They have everything (looks, power, money, etc) and adored by all. Omegas on the other hand are viewed poorly because of their heat. They're mostly viewed as commodities. They're treated harshly and needs a lot of work to do just to be acknowledged. The heat is dangerous for alpha because it makes them lose their reason and will try to attack the omega so that's why omega needs heat suppressant (some manga have alphas' suppressants). Heat = irresistable aroma, call for mating because it won't subside unless you have sex with alpha. "Fated mate" is for alpha and omega. This is kinda tricky because there's different signs but this is reserved only for alpha and omega and only them will know and feel. The beta are the normal humans. They don't get heat and won't be affected by omega pheromones. At first, manga made them as an extras but now involves them more in the story to add dynamics.

In different mangas, they have their own rules and put their twists but what I said above is the main core rule.

I googled omegaverse and got alllll the details lolol, thank you for replying. That’s an interesting AU, but I like BL set in realities more similar to our own. I appreciate the explanations! :)

I think that was in response to me. (My original post says “Korean trend”). I wasn’t sure if “omegaverse” might have been some kind of gay club scene coding, like NYC in the 70s/80s. Since I had seen it in a lot of Korean made manhua I thought maybe it was something like that. Since hierarchy is a big part of Korean language and society, ie hyung and Noona, I figured the lgbtq community might have its own subculture with alpha/omega stuff. Just my ignorance and imagination. I hope I didn’t offend anyone. I was truly curious about what it was.
