I get what u mean but I would still feel angry and horrified. If someone, pet or human, was sick and in pain I wouldn't kill it to make it stop suffering
but we have people that suffer from painful diseases and they choose death instead of long term painful and unsuccessful treatment
Maybe the cat was injured by the Crow, but he'd barely looked at it. How could he really have known? The guy didn't kill it to put it out of it's misery. He killed it to test the boy's reaction.
