I think it meant something else. Like his skin was "dyed" black when he loss his love for humans. Still bad subtext, but I don't think he physically dyed himself a darker color.
that's what i understood! he put a spell on him with the mark who is on his face to change the color of his skin.....
So, I'm guessing it's literal after rereading. His hatred of humans literally dyed his skin black. I don't think the crest has anything to do with it. Again, BAD subtext.
