I'm dropping this. I sympathize with what she went through and all, but since the beginning, I don't understand why she was so happy with the duke and the priest but get scared and repulsed by ravian? It's because of him that she manages to get out of her situation but not one word of thanks nor trust from her? These people did not even lift a finger to help her when she was abused, especially the priest.

Same and I was so confused with how comfortable she was with the priest.

@ me when she changes her attitude towards him. Because I can see that ravian had been used and used before because of his demeanor so the MC has no right to treat him that way. She is only basing her opinion of him in the book or what other people is saying.

I feel you and I think it may be more of a pacing issue. I thinks its more that she understands her social contract with the priest. His niceness to her is like redemption for himself so it feels like give and take. But she doesn't know where she stands with Ravian. She doesn't know what she gave to have someone so powerful in her hands and she doesn't feel worthy...........but its also super frustrating and I wish she would just let him love her but who's to say something f'd up didnt happen in that stone chamber and maybe she's more afraid of herself and he instinctively reminds her of that. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I just want to read for the hopeful downfall of the empire and transition to a BAB

i agree, like she barely knows anything about Ravian (no-one knows anything) and he reminds her of the experience of being sacrificed, it's kind of the instinctive fear of the unknown, i think much of her bravery, and standing up for herself, comes from having experienced worse in the sacrifice chamber, and Ravian IS the bad experience that her courage stems from.
she is probably also afraid of his overwhelming power, and mostly the fact that she holds this power, the ability to control the lives of an entire empire, like bro that's a lot of responsibility, what if she can't control him, all she knows about Ravian comes from him himself (he could say whatever BS he wants not v trustworthy), her father and the temple (and they obviously got it wrong before)
yeah i don't like how she already likes the priest, but maybe she can feel that the priest is guilty, or maybe since he was the only one he was a little against her sacrifice (although he WAS in favour of sacrificing SOMEONE) he has been ingrained as the one person who stood up for her in her darkest moment? idk kind of if your entire life people have only ever been cruel to you, and ONE person is kind, then it's like wow that person is amazing, even if they are most definitely not.

I mean. He's also the exact reason she was supposed to die and be sacrificed. He acts so cold and in different and literally can destroy things with a snap. I'd be scared too.
