I don't like non-con but dear lord it is everywhere. At first I was outraged and would quit the manga right away, however I got used to it and now I just finish the manga. I still don't like it but being exposed to it so often did change my attitude towards it. See how these manga's are not so innocent.
We should stop pretending they are.
But I do. So where does that leave us? YKINMK, and I would like to see *more* consensual sex in manga, so I understand you there, but how would you change this? Which manga authors do we look at and say, "Okay, we have too much non-con, you can't do that anymore"? Which scanlation circles?
Perhaps they aren't, but they have one useful purpose even then: As fiction tools, they can open up paths for non-acrimonious dialogue that *can* help change that. However, attacking something someone else likes isn't going to solve anything. That makes them defensive and puts everyone on the wrong foot to begin with.
There are things that can be done even within the framework of /comments on porn/ to combat rape culture, but too many people are going about it the wrong way and immediately getting themselves discredited by the people whose opinions they are looking to change. Telling me my kink is evil is never going to change it, yet that what the majority of the comments I see try to do. All they do is make me mad.
Like I should either totally condemn the manga, or like I should be crowing 'it's not rape!' Neither of those suit. Yes, it is rape. No, there's no excusing that. HOWEVER, and this is a pretty fucking big however, this is porn. Things like forced sex, violent rape, and coercion are *always* popular in *any* porn. And the reason for *that* is that they are *extremely* popular *kinks*! They are *certainly* my kinks! When I want to read something I find romantic I never come to these, but when I just want to get off it's always straight to the non-con for me! And that's fine, because this is just fantasy. However, the people apologizing for it should probably take a step back and look at their ethics. Just own that non-con gets you hot. There's nothing wrong with that, so long as it either stays a fantasy or is planned out and executed with a willing partner in a safe, sane, and consensual way. We can all get along here, people!
