Duo is marketed to teach anyone the language, not just professionals. I have made friends who speak fluent Japanese who tell me that duolingo's Japanese course is not the best. I tried it for over 100 days, and then switched to Genki and youtube videos and learned more in 2 weeks then I ever did from duo. They do not explain particles or sentence structure, they don't explain anything they just make you speak it. And don't get me started on their lack of Kanji help. So I was just stating to the author that duo isn't the best thing out there, especially if you want to learn Japanese for the purpose of translating manga.
It’s more for spoken aspect. I use Duo for German Just to keep brushed up but only because I no longer live there and I know no one here that’s fluent. Which is why it’s perfect for speaking and not the written form of Japanese. Those who want to travel and get the gist of a language so they aren’t assed out when they step foot in country, duo is awesome. I was just letting YOU know the purpose of duo. Not all language learning sites are the same.
Don't use duo! That bird is evil, he's out to get me. Also they don't teach you informal Japanese, only formal, which is weird.
