The father talks about roman, and expresses that he feels guilt because roman was the only child they had when they were poor, and also the only one he beat up. Because they were poor and struggling, he took out his frustrations on his young son(roman), and consistenlty says he feels bad, but then he threw something at roman's head while angry so we can also assume he still hits roman on occasion, even if with objects.
The father is such a dipshit, and I feel terrible for the original roman. He was just a commoner boy, abused by his father, then suddenly thrown into luxury and left to his own devices to become a spoiled alcoholic because his dickhead of a dad felt so guilty for physically abusing him. He doesn't have the right to suddenly feel proud of his son; his son died. His son died, because his father was neglectful and abusive, about to send him to war as fodder, and everyone else in his life saw him as a dimwit.
The father doesn't deserve happiness in the wake of his son's death.
