Dumb is an understatement, he's stupid and ignorant that's for sure.
You're not the only one. I feel so bad for Astalieu too. After all, he's like his father as well but also different. From the start he has always been a follower of Balzac. And he hasn't instigated anything as far as I can recall. He's also never been completely on board with what Balzac has done, again, iirc.
