I recommend you just read the novel, this version goes really fast so it can get confusing. This version is more just giving visual to the novel. As for whats going on we're seeing a very long flashback. Its gonna be a while until it gets back to the present. Hope this helps!

I for sure believed that this is the flashback where the real tragedy starts, the fall of wei ying, on how wen ning got turned into a ghost general,where jiang cheng got his hatred for wei ying and how wei ying got the name 'Yiling Patriarch'.
