I read the novel and the reason he treated him badly is because a “friend” of the tall one (forgot the name) told him that Xiao Mu got the exchange program by unfair methods (that is not true, our MC is intelligent) so that is why he ignores Xiao Mu.

I feel like at the beginning he was def ignoring him because of his internalized homophobia and although that’s no excuse the reason he’s trying to do so much for him now is because he wants a chance to explain himself. I don’t feel like it’s guilt trippy he just honestly wants to make sure the MC is safe and make up for how awful he treated him.
