I would go so far as to say he hurt his own son to give himself an excuse to start the war because Kenneth took all of his excuses away.
I legit was thinking the same when I saw the bruises. Cause the last thing I recall was the king saying to lock him in his room or something along those lines.

I bet the old asshole of a king is gonna blame Kenneth and say he kidnapped the prince and hurt him to threaten their kingdom.
