Well really on my opinion I think shounen ai tends to focus more on the development of the relationship leaving less room for smut scene BUT I have read some that do have smut scenes but it's still shounen ai while yaoi it does focus on the relationship you will definitely see a lot of smut scene so basically just think of it like this shounen ai is more about the relationship than the sex while yaoi there is relationship but includes a lot of sex scenes and remember none of the genre guarantees fluff there could be angst in both and any genre.

We still need to know if there’s any action or not. BL is an umbrella term.

Just say if it has smut or not, it’s really not that hard.

It literally has been stated by Japanese men that it is outdated and shouldn’t be used. As I’ve said just say if it has smut or not it’s easier than saying “yaoi” or “shounen ai”. It’s also the proper term.
