No, you're right Trigger is gay. I think it's like a political marriage. So maybe they will be expected to have flings on the side, since they are just friends
Trigger is gay but by marrying her he keeps his face in "society" and for her having to give up majority of her life she gets money and a house and would no longer be a slave again she could actually achieve freedom in that time period. And technically he would love her for the rest of their lives but as a sibling type of love not in a sexual way.
