Basically Maxi's dad sends them on like dangerous and horrible missions that they must complete and because they don't know how Maxi gets treated, they aren't too happy being around her.
I think they're judging her because of her family. They don't know that she also suffered from her family. Also, I read from the novel that people from Anatol tried to take her to Riftan's place but they were mistreated by her family as well.

-------- so basically the misunderstanding is going to get a bit worse and riftan is going to send her to her father's house not really because he misunderstood but he might have thought it would be more comfortable for her maybe while he was away or something and that's when he discovers he made a mistake bringing her there so it's not a complete spoiler because I don't remember exactly why he took her there but it did have something to do with her comfort so idk sorry for spoiling---
