Theres a difference between joking and trolling. Joking is meant to be funny and inoffensive. Trolling is purposefully offensive to elicit a response.
And im not defending that, but i do think people's reaction to it could potentially be harmful to their mental health. You never know somebody's mental state and death threats could just be the last straw. I thought it was common internet etiquette.
