I don’t think so. It could be he left her with the man thinking she’d be in a good situation not knowing the former husband was abusive. So he’s saying he should’ve gone to save her sooner had he known the man was abusing her that badly
OK with the ML saying “I didn’t expect him to treat her that badly“ and saying “I should’ve gotten to her sooner“ implies that he left her in an abusive situation willingly, he was fully aware and did nothing until she was literally being sold
