I think even at the start, he was right with how dramatic he was, since basically to him it was all so sudden, so I think he had a spine this whole time, but it's only till now he could process it and show his usual self.

I completely agree, of course he'd be heartbroken and depressed in that scenario. So it was not unusual to see him so vulnerable to those assholes... but not anymoreee, Yoon is healing and it's definitely showing
