The reason he's so into money is to be worthy of her, that's why he was buying her all the dresses.

He even admitted that he neglected her during those 3 years with an excuse of being busy and thought that she might had affair. It's like he's 50/50 in this situation and yet doesn't care as long as she doesn't leave him.
His problem doesn't stem from inferiority complex towards her but rather as Violet said, he's afraid (of not being accepted by anyone). It all began when his mother left him and if not for those expensive coffee beans he wouldn't be accepted by these shitty duke family. That's why he is way into money. He is like MONEY CAN BUY EVERYTHING INLCUDING HAPPINESS. He's not into money bc of her but rather bc of what he had to go through during his childhood.

I think it's everything both of us said. I agree with your analysis of him, but not with that what i said is wrong. It's both issues, the inferiority complex that he holds towards high society in general (what you mentioned) and the one he feels towards her as the "pinnacle of high society".
I know he was initially making money for his parents, but that very quickly came to include Violet when he fell for her at first sight when they got married. He kept buying her dresses and thought she was returning them all, which he took to be because she's too good for them because he looks at her as "the princess". He keeps trying to buy things for her to feel like he's worthy of her and that's why he's so focused on making money now.

tbh I feel bad for Winter but I feel triple bad for Violet. How come he suspects of Violet having affair? His and her shitty families keep breaking Violet's heart and Winter is not aware that he is on the train with those shitty families and hurting Violet so much. Let me tell you what? This dude is one of those guys that makes a mistake, loses their lover and regrets it and come and crawl to their lover's feet for 2nd chance...
