His core breaks while saving Tess while fighting <super spoiler> bad guy. Because it broke he can never do magic again as we know it and can not get it back. Without giving away major spoilers and paragraphs of explaination, think of it as he learns the fundamentals of what Silvia's beast will allowed him to do. At the current point in the novel, he can't really duplicate it but he's learned other similar capabilities.
