I started off with Fake and Loveless, which is showing my age a bit i guess. :P

nope. Fake is nothing like New york new york.
Romance is super slow. (and nothing is even seen when sex finally does happen) But it makes up for it with a rocking storyline, some REALLY pretty sexy moments, and lots of humor. There's even some Het couples with strong women protagonists that aren't out to get in the way of the main couple.
For a starter yaoi, it's really nice. You really feel the love by the end of it. Like, there's nobody else as perfect for Dee and Ryo except for Ryo and Dee.
Fake 2 was written many many many years after and the art is radically different. That paired with and overall different feel to the stories makes it not as compelling in my opinion, but the original 7 volumes are fantastic!
