Remember his brother and the woman he married? They both died right? At the end of his life, he wants to do everything to fulfill their dream of having a peaceful life. He wants to be able to meet them in the afterlife and proudly tell them that he was able to live well and protect their son. He has been anticipating for that moment all his life.
It might not be ideal for others, but that's the kind of life he wants to live. I love how consistent he is with that.

I’ve never really understood why people who are so truly in love, with one being immortal, the other still chooses not to be immortal and live with their true love forever.
Why wouldn’t you choose to be immortal with them!?
