they are trying to justify his actions by making him seem more likable/sympathetic. it's how it works in almost every mainstream yaoi, shitty ml appears, does shitty things but he has a tragic childhood so aww poor him, in the end he ends up with the mc and they live happily ever after. if they wanted people to feel bad for him they shouldn't have made him this much of an asshole in the first place
