gay man here. it CAN hurt, but with adequate fingering foreplay (to relax anal muscles), lube (to reduce friction and prevent tearing), and experience, it can become pleasurable. unlike vaginal sex, anuses do not self-lubricate and are not as elastic as vaginas, which is why it can really be a rough experience without proper preparation.
it's also good to note that mindset and preference play a huge role! first-timers need to be relaxed and comforted verbally and with other foreplay while getting fingered, while some people are just do not find sexual satisfaction from taking it up the ass (and that is okay!)
