It’s really shitty but he didn’t wanna test his love he used that as an excuse. At that time in the story he never really was serious about Shinobu (uke), he went out with the other guy to upset him on purpose. Kou (seme) didn’t realize his feelings until way after when Shinobu had transferred. Hope this clears it up!

Did the seme feigned to to have a relationship with the other guy to make the Uke worried? Just to make sure that the Uke’s love is real and not out of attachment? I’m really confused.
