Alright, I understand where you’d be coming from if this were an American comic, but this is coming from a country where roughly 98% of the citizens are natives. Furthermore the concept of “whitewashing” I doubt most people even know about, maybe people who’ve lived in America for an extensive amount of times or trail the internet looking for that kind of stuff. So before you get your panties up in a bunch and yell “racism” consider that it’s coming from a country where racism hardly exists. Lastly, having tanned skin isn’t considered attractive in Japan, the general beauty standard is having light skin, and before you start throwing a fit about it not being inclusive, I will emphasize again that only 2.2% percent of the population are from different countries.
Sure you can get angry about it. But you still have to consider where this story is taking place. From what I can tell , the citizens in the kingdom mostly have light hair, light colored eyes (like hazelnut) and light skin. So seeing a dark haired person with dark skin might be seen differently towards them because they have never seen a person with features like that before since it’s rare. Though it wasn’t the best choose of expressing the light spirits blessing by giving her light skin, it still helps 5e narrative of the story and how the plot will move forward.
It’s very insulting to think that Japan doesn’t know/understand what racism is and there are tan skinned Japanese people. while I understand the beauty standard over there is to have light skin, it’s incredibly gross for them to portray dark skin as something bad and horrible and then to suddenly whitewash her when she gets the light power. While I love the premise of this story and all the characters it’s incredibly disappointing for the creators of the book to suddenly make her lighter as if she’s suddenly more “purer” just because she got the light spirts blessings.

Smh, I don’t think that the artist’s intention was to come off as racist, furthermore I don’t think any Japanese person said “that’s being colorist” or racist, and the target audience is probably young Japanese women and men who like that kinda manga. Furthermore, changing an attribute about a character’s “beauty” or looks in general is an incredibly common stories. Literally take Cinderella for example, she went from wearing poor dirty clothes and in a low class, to being a princess. You could say Cinderella is “shaming poor people” how, “putting her in that beautiful gown is to make poor people ashamed of their lifestyle, hygiene, and clothing “ but we don’t do that do we? Because this was related to color of skin we suddenly have a problem, but if you’re seriously gonna get your panties in a twist about a scene that lasted a few seconds at best, then don’t be selective about what it is you’re complaining about. Because guess what? It just makes you look like you wanted to start some beef for the attention and or the validation.
Are you stupid? There is definitely a difference between going from poor to rich and going from tanned skin and “evil” to having lighter skin and being “pure”, you using cinderella as a counter argument is stupid as hell cause in no way does cinderella ever make it out that poor people are horrible and that rich people are better unlike in this story where they constantly point out that the main character has darker skin than everyone else because she’s being protected by an “evil” spirit. I’m not going to argue with you anymore cause your clearly one of those people who doesn’t realize that these problems actually exist in real life and aren’t some sort of “woke” argumentative topic on the internet.
this manga is pissing me off like why the fuck did the light spirit feel the need to white wash her ?? like yall CANT tell me that wasnt weird. like couldnt the light spirit just have given her the power to use light instead of altering her appearance??? like it was so unnecessary
