Really? Anyone else think that too? I didn't interpret it like that at all. It just seemed completely out of left field.
this might be a spoiler and i only found this from the comments, but looks like the priest was so desperate for the girl, was because she was the reincarnation of the said saintess, which is the priest's reincarnation's lover. basically, the past priest (before now) was the lover of the past saintess (who's the girl now).
