I thought Maya was his last name???? Cuz his first is Hideyuki. I could be wrong though.

The kanji for Maya can either be read as Masashi or Maya. In this case the yomigana from the raws said Maya so....its neither a nickname nor an abbreviation.
Its just a translation miss.ლ(´ڡ`ლ)
