I think it has to do with the time period in more realistic stories nobles couldn’t actually read or write.

yuh I kinda agree,but noblewomen receive education too but super different than what males learn.Women learn how to be elegant to be an obedient and responsible housewife.They taught women such as etiquette and they go to parties with an invitation so I think they could somehow read and do basic calculation.
