It's a stupid Asian thing. I mean fat phobic people are everyone but in Asian countries its not veiled at all. I read at least 4 Japanese manga where a fat perosn is called a pig and better yet, refers to themselves as such. If they don't make fat people ugly , they make them unhygienic and disgusting... it's so stupid and often ruin what could have been a good story
The funny thing is, sumo wrestlers are still revered. And fat people were normally thought of as rich, because they could afford to eat. They also we're not often kind so that is why they play villains. But the fat and stupid icon has more to do with European and american influences. They often saw, and still do see, European and Americans as fat and stupid slobs. They also see them as villains because many don't bother to learn about the Asian culture, or the use and abuse the country, like the British did with china. A lot of these views are ingrained into their culture. Just like the way they draw eyes, the larger the eyes the more innocent the character, the smaller the more devious. Also these webtoons and manga aren't made with other cultures in mind, they are made in mind with what will sell in their country.
Sumo wrestlers tend to be men and female sumo wrestlers in Asia face a lot of prejudice for their weight and ‘unfeminine’ hobby. Asia might not be as strict with thicker men but when it comes to women you’re often discriminated against if you weigh much more than 50kg. Even if hundreds of years in the past thicker women were revered- that hasn’t been the case in the past century. Fat phobia may not have been a problem in the past but it definitely is one now. Especially with recent fads where women in China try to be so slim they fit into children’s clothes. Fat phobia is never good but in parts of Asia it’s downright dangerous.
I hate how people make fat synonymous with ugly. The mc was cute at the beginning.
