Penelope has qualities of a badass but she is just very pitiful and restricted.
It is hard to see her being tortured by this hellish system/novel/world.

There are worse scum MLs than Callisto but at the beginning the way he uses his status and privelege to intimidate/pressure the FL and expressing carelessly to kill anyone he just don't like...
That is typical for a romanticized hot crazy dangerous tyrant type.
It's a BIG NO GO for me.

If I were in Callisto shoes... I would be either suicidal, insane or very angry and determined.
I probably would use my anger to destroy my enemies and abolish the whole system and definitively not to force a connection with a pretty initially powerless girl whose life I once threatened.
The ML in Empress of Another World whose circumstances is similar to Callisto behaved differently and more rational/pragmatic despite his huge trauma and anger.
There are other characters in other stories constantly are threats who don't toxic tropes!
