they don’t say it directly, but in ch 5 they explain that when a vampire’s body grows rapidly their mind develops too. if he still had a mentality of a child, he would be going to school with children, not teenagers… he also wouldn’t be working in a research facility three years later. I don’t think someone with the mental age of a 5 year old would be able to do either of those things.
