Have you tried the option "read for ink"? You get those in your messages. Basically you have to read 3 or 4 free chapters of a given series and they give you bonus ink you spend on the series you want. You also get a fortune cookie with free ink every Monday that you have to claim. About the ads, you have to keep checking regularly, you'll get some.
