I feel that if someone is relatively new to manga then they may judge that particular manga series based purely on the cover and/or artwork (I'm definitely guilty of this!). I know it may not even make all that sense as the cover artwork changes if a manga has more than one volume, but if it doesn't does anyone create an assumption on how good or bad the series will be (I know it sounds kinda harsh).
I do that sometimes too, but I find it kinda annoying if a particular manga is overrated. Like, once I start reading a manga that's really popular and by the end find that it's not really anything special....

it's called fanbasis, and i understand you, it's really annoying, when there's a lot of fanbasis but at the end it wasn't that good, i think it's just a thhing of pov Σ(  ̄□ ̄||)

SAO being one of the most irritating fanbases for anime. Not so sure about any manga fanbases though...
