It said there were 4 consorts and 6 heirs left behind but that doesn't make sense, how would the mc be the 8th child or the 8th anything if there are only 6 children? Furthermore, the family photo/painting they showed had more than 6 children in it. I think the translators made some mistakes though because of the quality of the rest of the chapter makes that difficult to believe.

I think you are right. Perhaps its the korean way of numbering their prince and princesses off? She was really far off from the throne. So if what we know now is right it should go as follows:
1) princess (Alive 1)
2) princess (Alive 2)
3) princess (confirmed Dead 1)
4) prince (Alive 3)
5) Gender unknown (Dead 2)
6) Gender Unknown (Dead 3)
7) Gender unknown (Dead 4)
8) MC (Alive 4)
9) Gender unknown (Dead 5)
10) Gender unknown (Alive 5)
11) Gender unknown (Alive 6)
Im only assuming 5,6,7 and 9 is dead because there was no confirmation on which prince or princess is alive. Only 3rd is the confirmed dead so far. That leaves around 2 more unidentified princess/prince still alive or dead with their whereabouts unknown that was not mentioned in the plot. But it doesnt matter because when it reaches a certain point only 3 will remain. :)

I’m pretty sure it was that she is the 8th princess by order including all the prince and princess that where born before her but died prematurely before the whole war(the whole political struggles). While she’s technically the 4th princess when numbering by siblings that are still alive at the time.

Ok I figured it out, they are numbered based on princes and princesses combined because if we were to count based on just PRINCESSES alone, at least 4 of the 6 unknown-gendered heirs have to be female (minimum because there would have to be 4 princesses in between the 3rd princess and MC). BUT if we were to count based on just PRINCES alone, at least 3 of the 6 unknown-gendered heirs have to be male (there would be 3 princes in front of the known 4th prince). In order for this to work out there would have to be 7 unknown-gendered heirs (4+3) but there are only 6 so MC can only be the 8th princess if count both princes and princess together.

From what I read from the novel, CMIIW.
The 3rd princess death is the fifth death of the royal descendants confirmed by Valhayle from the war itself.
That eleven descendants are all legitimate children.
By political struggles, they were probably no death, because the first and second princess have much power and always kept below them checked.
So the king has 5 consorts and 11 descendants.
The king and the 4th consort died in the castle.
And five of his children died in the war.
So there's 4 consorts and 6 royal decendants left just like @Lyniie stated above.
Pretty sure the first and second princess alive coz they can be considered the characters which affect the story the most.

How is MC the 8th princess? Are they numbering by the number of siblings or number of princesses. I’m assuming # of siblings.
So: 11 heirs, 5 dead
Princess 8 is birb
Princesses 1-2 are the main heirs
Princess 3 is dead
Prince 4 is missing
