Sung Il-Hwan is actually one of the hunters that possess/borrowed powers from the rulers. So when Jinwoo is fighting the three Monarchs, his father appeared and protect him while he is still transferring or like getting the full power of Shadow Monarch. He died but Jinwoo and him still manage to meet and talk to each other for a brief moment.
