Maxi: was insulted and treated like shit all her life = questioning of her own self worth and lack of confidence. Which results in insecurity with literally everything. You know what that means? It cannot be magically healed by a man having sex with her like a lot of stories seem to have logic on that. I have went through the same thing as her so I can tell you that it takes YEARS to gain confidence
Now on to our boy Riftan: the way he was raised was the sword, killing, justice, cold, authority etc. You can tell that he has a hard time toward subjects that revolve around coddling and gentleness. While he loves his wife dearly, he acknowledges that it is a flaw that he cannot be 100% gentle and open to his wife because that is something he can’t really do right away. It takes a long time to change your way of thinking that you’ve known since birth.
The verdict: Maxi’s insecurity and Riftan’s temper is something they have to fix together as husband and wife. They are the polar opposites of each other and they are aware of that. Riftan would never hurt his wife and Maxi’s personality cannot simply be fixed easily either.
This story is very realistic in terms of flaws within a person. Once Maxi learns her self worth and Riftan being a lot more soft, they can grow like that oak tree in the garden. And I believe that could be why it is in the story title.
