The attitude toward hentai and yaoi among its readers is completely different though. I don't see hentai readers blowing their top off when people shame the genre. They agree that it's trash and are completely aware at all times that what they are jerking off to is strictly a fetish object. With how cartoonish, ridiculous and unserious hentai is, you can't take it seriously even if you tried. I've never seen people sit and have contemplative discussions over porn as if it was a proper movie.
Even if you aren't a straight guy yourself, I am sure you've lived enough alongside straight men your age and surrounded by pop culture dominated by straight young male sexual lifestyle to know what people think of hentai. It's seen as ridiculous, exaggerated and treated like a joke both by the authors and readers. Nobody gets emotional over hentai as if they're reading a real story. Everyone understands that the characters are just sex objects. On top of that, the cultural consensus always condemns the extreme perversions of hentai and porn anyway and even straight men who indulge in hentai will unanimously agree that it's trash and no one will jump to defend the literary value of the practice.
I don't see that same attitude with yaoi. Yaoi authors and readers take themselves far too seriously and even though they're writing and reading fetish trash, they don't want to acknowledge it. So, they'll try to romanticize problematic shit, put in extraneous plot to get people to care, will put efforts into proper character design that look like actual humans instead of just drawing caricatures and they'll put in moral and emotional conflict to get people to care. That's why yaoi gets backlash when readers come across horrendous shit. Because instead of treating characters as sex objects like hentai does, they write them as people.
The closest equivalent to yaoi and its problem from genres intended for a straight male audience would be shounen harem/romance and some psychological seinen. As in they are both genres that write stories meant to be taken unironically but involve highly immoral, dangerous behaviours that are so gross and abnormal that they can only be a manifestation of a severe mental disorder. The psychological seinen is a non issue because no one who reads it enjoys it. It's for intellectual gratification, not emotional. You read psychological seinen the way you read true crime. The whole purpose of it is to cause fear and discomfort the same way horror does. That's why horror can have serial killers as main characters and not be problematic because the authors are trying to make you hate and despise and fear that evil.
The other one, the shounen romance genre, can be as morally precarious as yaoi because it also relies on whitewashing and romanticizing the grossest garbage and gaslighting you into believing that utter psycho evil isn't as bad because look they're in love, the trash that even a landfill will reject is a little angel pookie because life struggles and just needs everyone to submit themselves to him, pamper him so he can feel better about himself, everyone's in love with him and they'll fix him. The only saving grace is that people can lambast these stories till kingdom come without the pressure to be be PC, make any gullible idiot who is falling for the toxic crap think twice and socially ostracize the genre such that anyone who reads it knows better than to admit that they enjoy it unironically and still, no one will jump down their throats accusing them of sexism, homophobia and what not.
The reason that process gets stonewalled with yaoi is because of people like you who resort to victim card when others point out the problems in your lifestyle. You will begin divert the conversation and push your burden of guilt onto those who question you by maliciously accusing people of being sexist or homophobic instead of actually confronting the defects and ills of your group as a human. You people seem to think your culture and community should be subject to weaker moral standards just because it has something to do with a perceived underprivileged identity. If you want to argue that people shouldn't complain about you enjoying gross, criminal shit because it's just porn, then it better look and behave like porn. I'll be convinced that this is as harmless as hentai when I see that the majority of the comment under problematic bls are "what the hell did I read?" or expressing sexual desires over the hyper sexualized caricatures instead of serious, emotionally charged discussions about how cute the couple is, how the MC deserved better or how lovely it is that the ML is completely obsessed with the MC when the couple in question involves a young guy with a much older man who has known him since the younger was a child.
