In the novel it stated that it has an ancient power under that tree and if he feeds it he will get the power, so that's what he's doing to get the power to protect himself because he fears the main protagonist of the novel :D

Yeah, the person who possess cale(redhead) is from modern times he isekaid into this fantasy world. He's feeding the hole because if he feeds it enough the hole will give him something important.
