So I’ve reread and this is how I rationalize it:
- in the short time they were together, she was forced to play the role of his dead sister for the sake of his mother. He was forced to accept it, for the sake of his mother.
- He empathizes with her and puts his foot down with his parents, allowing for her to shed the persona of his sister.
- He fell in love with HER, not his sister. Eugene was always hyper aware they are not related, though she eventually became family to him. Unlike his other siblings, she was always mature and they connected on a different level.
I'm so conflicted. I love them together, and they are not blood related... But my stupid 21st century morale is kicking out
