Basically empire means a powerful country, the pope gives a right to a country to name itself that. But sometimes countries might do it arbitrarily. Like how Napoleon called himself Emperor of France, when France itself was Republic. In that case he is self declared Emperor, and country is not called Empire. It basically how countries created, if others approve of a country then it is.

wow thats some huge terms you wrote there...can you give a simpler version and tell me whether the king or the emperor is superior?

an emperor is superior compared to a king because a king only rules a kingdom while an emperor rules an empire, and an empire is known to be more powerful compared to kingdoms. Since kings usually rule only over one kingdom while emperor's can control a whole empire which is i think made up of many kingdoms. Depending on their territories i think lol

    also !spoiler!

Well, empire is a country stronger than others. In military, economy etc. Emperor is stronger than king because he rules singlehandedly compare to king where nobles rules territories and kings has to have support of nobles to rule

Yeah, big time, especially for princes who to order to ascend the Throne have to gain massive support from nobles. If you ever read novel or manga where princes and princesses have yo win over nobles for the fight for the throne

Although there is different meaning as well. Empire is a country which made from different territories with different religion and history. However it doesn't add up to the narrative of this story
