I don't think Bakin ever realised Gento's feelings. He didn't seem to get it when he was sorta confessing in that corridor, nor did he even notice the disappearing spirit's final words or that they were for him. In that regard he and the emperor make a fine pair with both of them incapabable noticing the one with real feelings for them.
After finishing the story Gento wishing to take over Bakin's body just seems another kind of cruel... from Gento's pov. Yea, it seems I ended up rooting for the moody asshole (eventhough I knew the story wouldn't go that way), but Shuki's character felt much too shallow for me to be able to like him, much less to be able to wish for his happiness. And now I'm going to sound a bit morbid, but after that half-way confession i was hoping (just a tiny bit) that things would go the way of Bakin dying.
This is literally incel behavior.... like just because he thinks he deserves Bakin love doesn't mean Bakin has to love him. Gento was a bad man who led someone on and treated them cruelly just because he wanted attention from Bakin. Seriously all you 12 year old yaoi fans are gross. Stop romanticizing this kind of behavior.
gento who was in an unrequited love with bakin had no other choice but to take the emperor to gain bakin's attention. if he couldn't obtain his beloved's love he could gain his hatred, something that runs just as deep. so every night he held the emperor with contempt and disgust, satisfying his lust for bakin, with self loathe and melancholy, brutally and harsh. being the man he was, with an unloveable personality (*rolleyes* tsundere, damn it why am I one, too??) and incapable of confessing his true love, he got assassinated. and his one true love could only sigh in relief.
