I agree. He can't show weakness to anyone when there's invaders. He missed and loves his wife. If she had gotten hurt is the thought that was running through his mind. He doesn't want her to endure anything remotely painful. Whoa is the day when he finds out about her father abusing her cause I fell like he'll kill that father

True, it's some sort of illusion to prevent Max from being the target by showing everyone that she's just someone who got married to him because of political reasons. It's like his defense mechanism for her. And abt the dad, yeah I think he definitely would tho my hunch is that he will do it in a torturously to the point that the father will wish to just die instead... But this is just a guess.

I mean, Riftan is a softie but he needs to be seen as a strong ruler incapable of having weaknesses to protect his own people so I just thought that it would make sense for him to be angry in front of others but not with Max in a room where there's only the two of them. And I also think that he's gonna apologize for how he acted. Again, this is just a guess.

Yeah I understand but this way (talking her down) she will never be recognized as the duchess and no one will respect her. He treated her like a child there.
In my opinion what would protect her the most is making them both seem strong and independent. I think he should’ve told her she did a good job (but a bit rough) and then ride back to the castle.
But I guess he acted rashly bc he didn’t expect her there when it’s dangerous and worried about her ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭

Yes, this also makes sense. Probably because he doesn't know what happened during his absence that's why he was surprised at Max's presence during the attack as a duchess trying to protect his duchy and his own people. As we know, she started handling some of the duchy's affairs while Riftan was not there so he is not aware at how Max was trying her best to be strong.

In a way, but I think it's mostly because we have been looking at the manhwa in Max's eyes that's why we do have some biased opinions, which I do understand. While I do agree with some that it was a toxic approach to someone who lived her life in a harsh environment full of traumatic events, I also want others to look at the other side of the story. I think that way we could decide if the ML is indeed an asshole or not and if the manhwa is worth reading or dropping.
I know some of y'all are angry at what Riftan did (and yes I was also quite disturbed at how his anger triggered Max's fears) but what if... it's just a what if that makes quite sense in my head at least...
What if he did that to make everyone believe that his wife is not a weakness to him in order for his enemies to not attack her? I mean, if he consoled Max in the middle of the battlefield with all his men and those attackers (plus the possibility of any spies, if there were any) then everyone will know his soft spot and decides to attack her for Riftan to surrender.
What do you think? This is just a guess tho
