It is toxic, the uke hasn't realized that he loves the director. He convinces himself that such a relationship is unnecessary and meaningless. He's in denial and doesn't want to face his mistakes and the pain he caused the director but yet he shows up to his movie premiere and can't stop thinking about it.

I understand, and I'm fully aware. But it is what it is right now. It's going to take time, communication, and a lot of sincerity to mend their relationship. But I'm not going to excuse his behavior.

Their relationship isn't toxic. What's toxic is all the things that are happening around them. Yes, the scandal that happened could be considered as a toxic part of the relationship, but it's not like if they knew they were going to start liking each other. You can tell that the uke regrets what he did as well as you can tell they both love each other.
