I thought the ML was the emperor
Pretty sure the earlier translation was ML is the Grand General with his own land to rule over, he's still under the Emperor's power
same the translation was a bit different however making him the general makes more sense :)
ML isn’t actually her father-in-law. He asked his son to go and bring MC to him, because MC is to become ML’s new wife. ML decided to send his son, bc he wanted to test his son’s greed (he said he sent his son to see if he would covet his father's woman). The son's mother (ML's first wife) asked her son to kill the girl or make her his (meaning rape her, if necessary), but ML is smarter and send some guys to save MC and if necessary kill his son, which they did. It turns out the son is not actually ML's blood. When ML was young - around 20 yo, he was already a great war hero and there was pressure from the nobles for him to have a son, every night a girl was sent to his room, but he killed all of them. He got tired of this, so he took in a woman (first wife) who was already pregnant with another man’s child and told everybody that the child was his. He raised the son as his own, but wanted to test him by sending him to bring MC to the palace, but the stupid son decided to listen to his mother and to make MC his – he said to the girl that he would bring her to the highest position by being his – she ended up accepting bc she was tired of always being in danger and she didn't know ML was looking for her, that’s when the son is killed (The son is a bastard, once he meets MC he grabs her boobs and tries to rape her, but is murdered in the process by the guys his father hired). MC is afraid, bc one of the guards who survived told her that the guy who was murdered was a prince, so she decided to say she was his concubine in order to survive, that's when she was brought to the palace. After the ML and the MC had their first night, he found out she was still a virgin (he wasn’t sure if his son did not rape MC or if MC have had sex with the son earlier), either way he never intended to let MC go and he was jealous of the possibility. Then MC confessed that she was not the son’s concubine and she only said that she was in order to survive after the son was murdered and she had nothing to do with his death, ML tells her he believes in her and tells her to stay with him, but she is afraid bc everyone thinks she is ML’s daughter-in-law, but ML doesn’t care about what other people think. The first wife still wants to kill MC in order to secure her position and she is angry that her son got killed instead of MC like she had planned, then she prepares a poison for the MC but she ends up drinking it (ML made her do it when he realized his wife’s intentions). MC finds out that ML was a general that she met during war and he saved her life (they met when ML went to say goodbye to his master - who raised MC as his granddaughter - and he requested ML to keep MC save after his death, ML decided to leave MC behind so she could spent the rest of the time she had with her grandfather and he would later sent someone to bring MC to him, that’s when he sent the stupid son). MC finds out that ML is the general who knew her grandfather and saved her during the war (ML was covering his face up to his eyes, that’s why she couldn’t recognize him at first). They have sex again, bc ML tells MC that's a good way to thank him for saving her. ML then asks the emperor to marry MC and he allows the marriage. ML always thinks about how much he wanted to make MC his, since the first moment he saw her and how he was afraid she would run away and leave him and how it would hurt him, so he wanted to make her pregnant ASAP. In the end, it is implied that MC is pregnant (her body had some physical changes and ML tells her she should stay with him forever).
